The Leage of Nations was the first international organization of its size supporting the notion of collective security. Collective security differs from what kept peace in Europe from 1815-1849. That system was a balance of power. And it did work until the balance was challenged, i.e. Crimean War, or when it was completely upset, i.e. the creation of Italy, and especially Germany.
Collective security really means that regardless of any sentiment for a nation by any and all others, if that nation is attacked by another nation all other member states will seek to aid the nation that is attacked. This sounds very reasonable, and perhaps a good way to keep peace, but the League suffered from quite a few problems right from the beginning.
